My Top 10 Favourite Actors

Well, you'll be pleased to know that I finally got around to making this post! It's over two weeks since I posted my favourite actresses, and I fully intended to make this post a few days later. However, time seems to have flown by extremely quickly...

THIS LIST IS SO HARD TO MAKE! Really it is!! Although the other list made me feel idiotically guilty when I had to whittle down the numbers and leave some of my favourites out, THIS list is infinitely harder. Mainly this is because I tend to watch films for the actresses rather than the actors as I just find watching them more interesting. I don't know why, but it's a fact.

The majority the just actors on this list are those whom I like at the moment...my favourite actors tend to be more fleeting than my favourite actresses. I go through phases of having a favourite, then I'll dump him for someone else, but I do always keep going back to their films! Well, the first 4/5 are always in the Top 10, actually.

A final point: I started to make this list yesterday, but, although I'd decided on the actors, I didn't quite finish it. This morning I woke up and realised I'd forgotten some of my all time favourites! Consequently, Marlon Brando was bumped off the list...much to Mille's joy I'm sure.

So, without further rambling ado, I give you....

Cary Grant

I love this man. Always have done, always will. There's not much more I can say except that he's the coolest, the most stylish man to ever live. Combine that with his marvellous acting chops, and you have perfection.

Frank Sinatra

You might be surprised to find him on this list, or you might not. Personally, I think Frank was a very fine actor indeed. However, it seems that he's a bit like marmite when it comes to his acting - you either love him or you hate him. When I started to enjoy watching him more as an actor, I was quite surprised by how many films I'd seen him in previously! I think the first film I saw him in, and noticed him in, was From Here To Eternity. He was utterly magnificent in it, and, ever since, I've been a huge fan of the actor Frank Sinatra.

Gregory Peck

Peck is marvellous in almost everything. I particularly love him in Beloved Infidel, Roman Holiday, and To Kill a Mockingbird. He's just an utterly, utterly fabulous actor!

Errol Flynn

I think my mother's love of Errol rubbed off on me ;D Mum and I used to watch The Adventures of Robin Hood many, many times and I really just love him in everything! I especially love him with Bette Davis in The Sisters. Anyway, Errol can always make me smile when I'm feeling glum...and that's a good enough reason to put him here!

Walter Pidgeon

I love Walter...especially when it's Walter and Greer, but Walter on his own is just as loveable. I think if I'd ever met him, he'd have charmed me senseless! ;D

Ronald Colman

Greer Garson summed up perfectly why I love Ronald so much, "I just think Ronald is such a romantic actor and he doesn't need cloaks and swords and horses to be romantic, he just is a wonderfully romantic person." SO TRUE! And, according to Greer, he was just as deliciously romantic in real life. His performances are so nuanced and beautiful...he's always a delight to watch!

James Garner

James Garner is my guilty pleasure. His smile, his dimple, and his excess of cool is just all too much for me! He may not be the greatest actor in the world, but I love him too much to care! He makes me smile, he makes me laugh (sometimes), and he always leaves me feeling happier after watching something with him in!

Jack Lemmon

Jack Lemmon is legend. He's just utterly hilarious and...well, it wouldn't really matter if he couldn't act because he's just so fantasmagorical.

Fred Astaire

I love Fred. A lot. I never used to like him that much...but he's definitely grown on me! His dancing never fails to make me happy, and even when he's not dancing he always to put a smile on my face! I admit it, I've dreamt of dancing with him! I honestly believe he'd even make me look good dancing! ;D He also doesn't creep me out like Gene Kelly usually does...

Ray Milland

I recently watched him in Arise, My Love. My word, I'd forgotten how much I used to love him! He's an utterly fabulous actor! :') LOVE LOVE LOVE HIM! [Cue obsession]

So there you have it! I hope to soon (HAH!) post my "The Only 10 Modern Actors/Actresses I Can Stand" list. ;D

A presto!

  3. My favorite actors are too much of that time dear Sophie, but the main ones are: James Mason, Stewart Granger, Cary Grant and Gene Kelly. Of course all of them had charm, each with its own style. Un bacione cara miaoooooooooooooooooooo

  4. Yeah, this is a hard ranking to make...I agree w/you about Cary, Errol, Gregory, Jack Lemmon... Ray is great in Arise My Love (what a great movie)....I love Frank as a singer, but not very much as an actor; I like Fred very much as a dancer, but not very much as an actor....but really James Garner is such a bore, I get sleepy every time I see a movie starring him :P

  5. GAH! Did you seriously just steal my entire favorite actors list, missy?! ;-D

    SERIOUSLY!

    Haha!

Cary, Frank, Gregory, Jack, Ray, and Fred are ALL in my top ten...and James is always hovering just outside.

And I do enjoy the other three as well! Haha!

    SUCH A GREAT POST!

And really, if you want to know about Ray obsession...you should ask me how I got the nickname Millie sometime! ;-D

  7. @Clara - I just checked out your list!! Some great names in there - one's that were just short of getting into mine: Mitchum, Bogie, Cooper. I have to say, I've never seen what others see in Clark Gable though. He was virtually perfect for GWTW, but in everything else I scream at the female characters to get away from him ;D I honestly can't stand him!

    @Millie - Most probably, my far-too-cool-Twinsy-from-the-other-side-of-the-world-who-was-separated-from-me-at-birth!! ;D

We just have good taste ;D

YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BE HAPPY THAT BRANDO GOT BUMPED OFF! :O shout...dance...sing...do SOMETHING!!

Why thank you, my dear! :D

Oooh, I know that! One day when I was stalking the past posts on your blog (because you're so funny it makes me sick! ;D ) I think I came across it! Isn't it something to do with the TCM forums, ILoveRayMilland, shortening, sticking, eternity....? ;D
